Abstract

The habit of doing any activity in the world of education with smartphones, makes reading culture rarely preserved. Building a reading culture can be done by the immediate environment around children, such as from family, playmates, neighbors, schools, or communities in their environment. The purpose of this research is to explain how the communication efforts of the Ciketingudik Reading Room Community in building a reading culture for children and how to implement the educational communication functions that exist in the Ciketingudik Reading Room Community. The research method used is through a qualitative approach. In this research, the object is the communication effort of the Ciketingudik Reading Room Community in introducing reading culture to children. Meanwhile, the research subjects were grup members from the Ciketingudik Reading Room Community. The research location is in Ciketingudik Village, Bantar Gebang District, Bekasi City, West Java. The results showed that the Ciketingudik Reading Room Community made several communication efforts in building a reading culture for children, such as establishing communication with regional officials, conducting interpersonal and group communication with children, and utilizing social media. Besides that, this community also implements four communication functions, namely the function of communication as social, expressive, ritual, and instrumental.
