Abstract

The film is able to influence society through the message content in it. Marlina Si Pembunuh Dalam Empat Babak is one of the films that appears as a critical expression of most Indonesian films that only feature women as objects. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of violence against women in this film. Representative theory and constructivist paradigms are used to see the description of the message. Film analysis in this study uses Roland Barthes's semiotics which is used to dissect how the representation of violence against women in this film. The results showed that forms of violence were seen through the meaning of denotation and connotation that the female characters in this film became visible and invisible objects of violence. Forms of violence that appear in the form of verbal, physical, psychological and sexual violence. Whereas unseen forms of violence are structural violence and cultural violence. The culture of violence contained in this film is the result of a patriarchal culture that influences gender construction in society. The dominant ideology contained in the film is radical feminism which strongly condemns the patriarchal system.
